Golden Key Points 

  1. Chlorophyll-bearing, simple, thalloid, autotrophic organisms found in aquatic and moist habitats.
  2. Reproduce via vegetative, asexual (zoospores), and sexual methods (isogamous, anisogamous, oogamous).
  3. Crucial in carbon dioxide fixation, oxygen production, and as primary producers in aquatic food chains.
  4. Classified into three main classes: Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae, and Rhodophyceae.

Bryophytes:

  1. Non-vascular plants commonly found in moist, shaded areas.
  2. Dominant phase is the gametophyte, which produces sex organs (antheridia and archegonia).
  3. Lack true roots, stems, or leaves; reproduce via spores.
  4. Ecologically important for soil formation, moisture retention, and early colonization of barren land.

Pteridophytes:

  1. Vascular plants possessing xylem and phloem, found in cool, damp habitats.
  2. Dominant phase is the sporophyte, differentiated into true roots, stems, and leaves.
  3. Reproduce via spores produced in sporangia on sporophylls, forming strobili or cones.
  4. Heterosporous, with two kinds of spores: microspores (male) and megaspores (female).

Gymnosperms:

  1. Seed plants with naked ovules, typically medium-sized trees or shrubs.
  2. Roots are taproots, stems may be unbranched or branched, leaves adapted to withstand environmental extremes.
  3. Heterosporous, with male and female cones bearing microsporangia and megasporangia, respectively.
  4. Pollen grains are released and carried by air currents to fertilize exposed ovules, leading to the development of seeds.

Angiosperms:

  1. Flowering plants with ovules and pollen grains developed within specialized structures called flowers.
  2. Seeds are enclosed within fruits, providing a diverse range of habitats and sizes.
  3. Economically and ecologically significant, providing food, medicine, and various other products.
  4. Classified into dicotyledons (dicots) and monocotyledons (monocots) based on seed structure and floral characteristics.
