- Definition: Commands and requests are types of sentences used to express instructions, orders, or polite appeals to someone to do something.
- Commands:
- Commands, also known as imperatives, are sentences that give direct orders or instructions.
- They are usually expressed in the base form of the verb (infinitive) without a subject.
- Examples:
- “Close the door.”
- “Don’t talk during the movie.”
- “Please be quiet.”
- Types of Commands:
- Affirmative Commands: These are used to instruct someone to do something.
- Example: “Wash your hands before eating.”
- Negative Commands: These are used to instruct someone not to do something.
- Example: “Don’t touch the stove.”
- Polite Commands: These are requests framed in a polite manner.
- Example: “Please pass me the salt.”
- Affirmative Commands: These are used to instruct someone to do something.
- Requests:
- Requests are sentences used to ask someone to do something or to express a desire for something.
- They are usually formulated in a more polite and indirect manner compared to commands.
- Requests can be made using different structures such as the modal verbs “can,” “could,” “will,” “would,” or by using the phrases “would you mind,” “could you please,” etc.
- Examples:
- “Could you please help me?”
- “Would you mind closing the window?”
- “Can you lend me your pen?”
- Politeness in Requests:
- Politeness is important when making requests, especially in formal or professional contexts.
- Polite requests often include expressions such as “please,” “would you mind,” “could you please,” etc.
- Being polite shows respect for the other person and increases the likelihood of a positive response.
- Formality in Commands and Requests:
- The level of formality in commands and requests depends on the relationship between the speaker and the listener, as well as the context of the situation.
- Formal commands and requests are often used in professional or official settings, while informal ones are more common in casual situations or among friends and family.
- Sentence Structure:
- Commands and requests can be in the form of complete sentences or phrases without a subject.
- In complete sentences, the subject (you) is usually implied but not explicitly stated.
- In phrases, the subject may be explicitly mentioned, but it’s often omitted in informal speech.
